Tucked away in the lush southwest of Colombia lies Huila (pronounced “wheeler”), one of the country’s most celebrated coffee-growing regions. Revered globally for its exceptional shade-grown Arabica, Huila consistently produces coffees of outstanding quality. The name “Huila” originates from the ancient Paez language, meaning “luminous mountain” - a fitting tribute to the region’s diverse and vibrant ecosystem.
Climbing to elevations of up to 2,000 metres in the foothills of the Andes, Huila benefits from fertile red volcanic soils, enriched by nearby active volcanoes such as Nevado del Ruiz. This mineral-rich soil, paired with the region’s equatorial climate, excellent drainage, and skilled farming traditions, creates an ideal terroir for cultivating world-class coffee. It’s no wonder Huila frequently earns recognition in the prestigious Cup of Excellence competitions.
